The Strain of Desk Work and Smartphone Use
A man in his 20s came to my practice with chronic neck and shoulder stiffness.
He explained that long hours of desk work, combined with frequent smartphone use, had been putting extra strain on his neck and shoulders.
I first conducted a thorough consultation and physical assessment. By checking his posture habits, daily lifestyle, and muscle stiffness, I was able to identify the root causes behind his discomfort.
A Dual Approach: Massage and Acupuncture
The treatment began with careful massage to release surface-level muscle tension and improve circulation.
Next, acupuncture was applied to target the deeper muscle layers. By adding gentle electrical stimulation through the needles, I could reach the deeper tissues and encourage relaxation throughout the body.
Once the muscles had softened, I returned to massage again - this time promoting deeper relaxation and improving the range of motion in the neck and shoulders.
Visible Results and Patient Feedback
After the session, I explained the underlying causes of his stiffness and shared strategies to prevent recurrence. This included posture improvement tips and simple daily stretches.
The patient reported,
“Pain and stiffness that I used to feel every time I moved my neck and shoulders have eased, and I feel surprisingly refreshed.”
Preventing Recurrence with Self-Care
In today’s lifestyle, it’s almost impossible to avoid smartphones and computers.
However, prolonged use can easily lead to “text neck” and shoulder stiffness. Left untreated, these issues may become chronic.
That’s why early care and consistent self-maintenance are key. If you notice discomfort in your neck or shoulders, I recommend seeking treatment before it worsens.
