Following up on my previous article, I would like to share a case study from our clinic: rehabilitation after rotator cuff surgery.
What is a Rotator Cuff Tear?
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder joint. Tears can occur due to sudden trauma - such as falling, collisions, or abrupt movements - or from long-term overuse in sports or work.
In some cases, even minor injuries or inflammation can progress into a tear, especially when combined with age-related changes that reduce tendon elasticity and strength.
Patient Case
One of my patients, an avid tennis player, experienced a rotator cuff tear about ten years ago during a match.
After undergoing surgery, he has continued to visit my practice for regular maintenance and rehabilitation to support his recovery and ongoing activity.
1. Massage and Myofascial Release in Post-Surgery Care
Massage plays an important role in reducing muscle tension, improving circulation, and restoring flexibility around the shoulder.
In this patient’s case, I worked on:
Releasing fascial tightness around the back and shoulders
Relaxing the upper arm muscles to improve scapular mobility
Addressing stiffness along the outer edge of the scapula
I also used techniques such as cupping and myofascial release with jojoba oil to loosen fascia and support functional movement.
2. Acupuncture and Electro-Acupuncture
Acupuncture helps relieve muscle tightness, improve circulation, and reduce pain and inflammation.
In post-surgery cases, timing is essential. Once scar tissue has stabilised, I apply acupuncture carefully after thorough consultation and palpation.
In addition, electro-acupuncture send mild electrical stimulation through the needles, reaching deeper layers of muscle and providing greater relaxation than standard acupuncture.
3. Gentle Exercise and Home Care
Alongside in-practice treatments, I guide patients through light, safe exercises to perform at home. These movements help restore range of motion, flexibility, and strength in muscles that were weakened by surgery.
The Importance of Balanced Rehabilitation
Successful recovery requires avoiding both extremes:
Too aggressive rehabilitation or premature exercise can overload the healing tissues, delaying recovery.
Too protective care, on the other hand, can lead to muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and longer healing time.
That’s why I design rehabilitation plans tailored to each patient’s condition and surgical history, ensuring the right balance of care and activity.
Recovery Outcome
For this patient, it took about six months to return to daily life without discomfort. After one year, he was able to enjoy tennis again, free from major limitations.
Rehabilitation is not only about physical healing - it also plays a vital role in boosting motivation and mental resilience. At my practice, I aim to walk side by side with each patient, supporting both body and mind throughout their recovery journey.
