A Patient’s Message: “I’m Climbing Mt. Fuji Today”

This morning, I received an email from my former patient, Ms. S:

“Today, I begin my Mt. Fuji climb.”

Ms. S had long suffered from lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), experiencing severe back pain and numbness in his legs.

Hearing that she was about to attempt a Mt. Fuji climb was deeply moving for me as her practitioner.

From Onset to Surgery and Postoperative Care

From the early stages, lumbar spinal stenosis significantly disrupted her daily life.

Despite her pain, Ms. S approached each treatment session with determination. She shared detailed feedback about her condition, even bringing MRI images to help guide her care.

However, conservative treatments alone could not provide sufficient relief, and surgery became necessary.

After her operation, she returned to my practice for ongoing post-surgical care.

Together, we continued with acupuncture, manipulative therapy, and rehabilitation to support her recovery.

Treatment as a Collaborative Journey

What struck me most was this: treatment is never a one-way process.

It is a collaborative journey between patient and practitioner.

Ms. S’s perseverance and positive attitude inspired me greatly.

Through mutual trust, we worked toward the shared goal of helping him regain his strength and confidence.

Four Years Toward the Mt. Fuji Summit

Although some leg numbness remained after surgery, it gradually eased through continuous treatment.

Over time, I came to believe, “This patient will surely overcome this.”

Ms. S then set herself a bold new challenge: climbing Mt. Fuji.

To prepare, she trained by hiking nearby mountains.

However, her journey was not without setbacks:

  • Pandemic restrictions delayed her plan.

  • A shoulder rotator cuff tear required six months of rehabilitation.

Even so, she never gave up.  Finally, after four years of perseverance, she set out to conquer Mt. Fuji.

BODYWORKS Azabu’s Approach to Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis treatment is rarely straightforward.

It often requires:

  • Conservative care

  • Rehabilitation

  • Surgery when needed

  • Postoperative therapy

At BODYWORKS AZABU, I combine acupuncture, manipulative treatment, myofascial release therapy, and tailored exercise programs to support each patient’s unique needs and goals - not only to relieve pain but also to restore a fulfilling lifestyle.

Ms. S’s story shows that treatment is not simply about eliminating pain. It can empower people to take new steps in life - even as bold as climbing Mt. Fuji.

I sincerely hope that Ms. S enjoys her climb four times over, for all the years she spent preparing for it.
